About Me

Hi, my name is Jay

Hi! I’m Jailyn “Jay.” I am a first-generation artist, violinist, and jewelry maker, and welcome to my page! What drives me is being open to exploring all different types of arts, whether it’s musical, painterly, or transforming something old into something new. I’ve participated in several artist markets, selling my earrings and bracelets. I was commissioned to restore a statue. I am a very patient person when it comes to my art, enjoying my free time creating jewelry in my little corner, drawing my original characters, or heading to my violin lessons.

                            Artist Statement

My work consists of celestial surrealist imagery that blends dreamlike compositions with cosmic symbols such as the moon, stars, and the sun. I craft surreal environments where reality gets bent and logic takes a backseat, letting irrational and unexpected elements coexist. Through layered imagery and symbolic distortion, I construct visual spaces that feel both expansive and intimate—grounded in the physical act of mark making, yet reaching toward the vastness of the cosmos.

I use celestial surrealism as a way to explore the unconscious mind and my ongoing search for emotional understanding. My thoughts and feelings usually feel all over the place. I see the universe as a kind of mirror for these inner states: thoughts that drift away, bump into each other, or just disappear before I can really get a handle on them. By using surrealism to twist reality, I can share experiences that seem irrational or overwhelming, showing the contradictions I live with — like longing and distance, clarity and confusion, connection and loneliness.

This work acts as a personal navigation tool, guiding me through the unknown parts of myself while giving viewers a glimpse into that journey. By exploring emotional patterns through cosmic symbolism, I invite others to reflect on their own inner worlds — the complex, messy, and often unnamed spaces we all carry. As my practice keeps evolving, I hope my work stays a space for exploration, encouraging connection through shared uncertainty and the beauty within it.

Teaching Philosophy

(Based on the questions from Writing a philosophy in art teaching)

  1. What are the over-arching objectives that you have for your students? What do you want your students to know at the end of the year? What do you want them to remember in twenty years?

  • My main goals for my students are to support them in finding their voices by exploring different media and techniques, and to help them express the intentions behind their work with clarity. I want to create a nurturing environment that encourages reflective, lifelong learning through activities like sketchbooks, artist reflections, and their art. I also hope they find inspiration and personal growth beyond the classroom setting. Of course, I want them to master essential skills such as drawing, painting, and understanding color theory.

  2. What objectives do you have for yourself? Where do you envision yourself in a year? In five years?

  • My personal goals include becoming more self-aware by understanding my core values, strengths, and motivations. I am committed to creating consistent routines that support my dreams, such as staying on top of assignments, dedicating time to my personal artwork, and improving my time management skills. I also hope to expand my knowledge and skills by learning on my own or with others, developing new abilities that will help me grow both personally and professionally. Staying curious and open to new ideas is very important to me.Thinking about the future, I am excited about preparing for student teaching and observation in spring 2027. In five years, I’d love to be more relaxed about teaching, focusing on helping my students and learning right alongside them.

3.Describe your teaching style and methods. For example, what learning theories do you most use? How do you deliver lessons (lecture, hands-on, mentorship)?

  • My teaching style is genuine and welcoming, focusing on discipline and meaningful lessons. I understand that there can sometimes be a disconnect between teachers and students, but ultimately, we're all just human. I aim to foster a comfortable yet enriching classroom atmosphere by being friendly, open, and upfront about what I expect. I love engaging students through hands-on activities, including mini-challenges and interactive tasks, to keep learning exciting and involved.

  4. Discuss a theme that runs through your teaching.

  •  A theme that would run through my teaching is all about growth.

  5. Why did you decide to become an art teacher?

  •  I decided to become an art teacher because of my love for art and education.

  6. Why is art teaching important to you?

  • Art teaching is really meaningful to me because even if I become a teacher, I would still love to learn and grow alongside my students. It's not just about art, but also about emotional growth. The most wonderful feeling is seeing my students become not only great artists but also wonderful people.

7.What or who influenced you to teach art?

  • My past art teachers and my family inspired me to pursue teaching art.

  8. What or who has most influenced your style of teaching? How does your teaching reflect this influence?

  •  My previous art teachers had a big impact on how I teach today. When I was younger, they were always friendly, relaxed, and open to ideas. Their classrooms made me feel welcomed and safe, creating a positive space for learning. They often gave short, engaging lectures with examples, and while students worked independently, they would play music to make the environment more cozy and enjoyable.

  9. How will you improve in the future?

  •  Over the years of teaching, I've had the pleasure of working with students from a variety of ages and backgrounds. I've enjoyed seeing creative minds come together, with each student inspiring me as much as I hope to inspire them. Every student is a wonderful chance for us to learn and grow together, helping me see things from a fresh perspective.
